Love the basic design. This is my second pack. New water bottle holders are more flimsy and challenging to use than old design. Could improve inside pocket design. Otherwise, I love it.Mountainsmith is one of the best.Absolutely incredible build quality. This thing will outlast you most likely unless you are sliding down granite rock faces on it.I found a Mountainsmith lumbar pack from the 90's and thats what got me hooked. These are unique bags and you will either love them or hate them. I love them. They leave my back open to breath and they keep the weight where it should be, right on your hips. No strain on the shoulders. They can comfortably hold about 8lbs. I have shoved about 15lbs in mine before and if you buy the optional strappettes this is absolutely not a problem.Mountainsmith stands behind their products. The buckle on my 25+ year old pack finally broke a few months ago. I emailed them telling them I love their packs and I just had a vintage one break on me. They asked me the width of the buckle. I told them it was 2 inches and their next email had a tracking number and they said "The buckle is on its way." Now that is customer service and truly standing behind your product. The best advertising is a happy customer who can't stop wearing and talking about your product. Mountainsmith does things right. If you have been thinking about buying this pack, do it now. You won't be disappointedThey have made some improvements to the design compared to my 25 year old pack. The addition of loops on the bottom to strap things to is a great touch. I can attach a light jacket or you could put your fishing poles in there. They added padding on the waist belt which is greatly appreciated. There is also a pocket on one side which makes great use of that space.I just wish they would add the same pocket to the other side as this is just dead space.Overall great quality product. One of my favorite bags. I bought this one for a family trip to Walt Disney World so I could be the family pack mule. Although a backpack may look larger, I would argue this has as much internal cargo capacity as most backpacks out there. I prefer this over a backpack because of its versatility. I can wear it on my hips and twist it around as-needed. Sometimes I'd wear it on my side for accessibility; most times on my butt behind me. Sometimes I'd spin it around to the front to wear in my lap on rides. Also, if you get tired of carrying it on your hips, I also used it as a cross-shoulder bag. You can also carry it like a briefcase. Once I really had the bag loaded heavy and it got tiring on my hips --- for those rare scenarios, you can also use the should strap as additional support while on your hips, too. Many pockets, straps and hidden compartments. I may just decommission my backpack that I use for the beach and use this. I can see how this bag would be great for hikers, tourists, beachgoers, visiting amusement parks, etc. It's worth noting that while there is a ton of storage, you can also cinch-up the straps and only put a little bit of stuff in there and the bag compacts a bit. I bought a D-Clip for the molle loops to secure my hat/visor when not in use and I also used that looped yellow-cord on the front more than I thought for my sweat towel or to hang my kids' towel or hats.I use this bag as my everyday carry bag to work. Also I recently used this bag on my Alaskan Cruise Vacation and it held up well. It is large enough to carry enough gear i.e. first aid kit, camera accessories, travel documents, and loose stuff like wallet, keys, pens, notepads etc, but small enough to get through the stores and lines we encountered on our trip. The two bottle holders will hold a 32 oz Nalgene or equivalent type water bottle. I used a 1L Aquafina bottle during the trip and had plenty of room in the bottle pockets to easily remove or replace the bottles. The hip belt is comfortable and easy to adjust. Due to my body type I needed to use the shoulder strap to keep the bag from slipping down during short hikes. Of note I did by the dual backpack type shoulder straps that are sold separately, but well worth the investment if you plan on doing day hikes with this bag.I only have 2 complaints about this bag. The first is the included shoulder strap. It is a little difficult to adjust while wearing the bag. My solution to this? I took a shoulder strap from a mini-ALICE pack and with minor modifications I had a comfortable shoulder strap that is easily adjustable and now even has a quick disconnect. My second complaint is that although the $80 dollars for this bag is worth it, after I ordered on Amazon, my local Sportsman's Warehouse was selling the exact same bag for $42. So, my advice is to shop around your local sporting good stores to see if there is a better deal and at that point you can't find a deal then buy this bag on Amazon.I, m replacing a 20 liter back back used as a go bag or get home bag since I have a disc injury in my lower back preventing me from carrying the back pack. With a few smaller pouches on the belt and on the pack itself I was able to fit everything in the lumbar pack. The total weight is nearly 16 pounds whereof 13 in and on the pack itself. This is probably close to the maximum carrying weight for the pack. Heavier than this and it will get uncomfortable.I, m using the shoulder strap to keep the pack from falling back and this seem to work just fine even though that puts a small amount of weight on my back. I recently made a 7 mile walk with it without any problems. The pack is great for my needs and has excellent quality in fabric, stitching and zippers but with a few improvements it could get even better.1. Molly webbing on the left hip belt (the side without a pouch).2. A front pouch with some depth. If the main compartment is full then only thin items like maps, documents and smartphones can be put in this pouch.3. Longer straps at the bottom so that a rolled up traditional sleeping mattress can be carried. I'm using separate straps for this on my pack which works out fine but better if I could use the built-in straps.I have a bad back, and own a great MEC belly pouch which is very old and very well worn. I thought I would like this one as an extra when I want to take some more stuff instead of a backpack, which I can not use. The belt on this pack it is too thin and has virtually no padding or support to be able to properly support the size of the bag. Because of that, the bag ends up hanging backwards and pulls on your back and is uncomfortable to carry. I know there is some sort of belt one can purchase separately (for lots of money) to be able to strap it over your shoulders, but it defeats the purpose of having a lumbar pack/belly pouch. The quality of the material seems durable otherwise and is the only positive thing I can say about the bag. Mine will last forever, because it is sitting there, unused. Too bad one only finds these things out after actually using it in the field a few times. By the time you find out, you can not return it anymore. I had a MEC lumbar pack, and its waist belt is wider and had better hip padding. But this works.... I like that it has more room, which is why I bought it.Very well constructed, great materials used. Prefect for day hikes, daily use and great for a emergency car kit / bug out bag.Awesome and look forward to using it in my next trip to Africa!
